On the bottom of the image an inscrition reads: With spirits gay I mount the box

the Duchess was involved in election canvassing by the date of Dighton's drawing

The painting was acquired by the London Museum as a work by Charles Hunt and is signed and dated accordingly at bottom left

Old Houses Aldgate c.1882 IN15976/1 Old HousesOld Houses, Aldgate, c. 1882. These houses were demolished in 1882 to make way for the extension of the Metropolitan Railway from Aldgate to Tower Hill. This photograph was commissioned by the Society for Photographing Relics of Old London to form part of a permanent visual record of historic buildings threatened with alteration or possible demolition in the 1870s and 80s.
